Patio String Lights - How to Make Your Own Using Tin Cans
Making your own patio stringlights can be a great craft for a cottage weekend or even a backyard slumber party campout. You will have to begin by asking friends, family and neighbors to collect and keep their used and emptied tin cans. Once you have received the desired amount of cans (preferably one for every bulb on your string of lights) you will need to clean them thoroughly and remove their paper labels. Now you are able to begin.
Here is what you will need:
1. Your collection of clean, label free cans
2. A few old towels
3. A hammer
4. A sharp nail
5. A pair of metal snips
6. At least one strand of outdoor lights
7. A pair of safety gloves and eye protection
Step One:
Begin by filling your tins with water and placing them in the freezer until frozen solid. Once the tins of water are frozen remove them from the freezer and lay them on the floor in the center of your old towel. Secure your tin by rolling the edges of the towel inward towards your frozen tin. The towel will help to hold your tin in place and will soak up the water as your tin thaws.
Step Two:
Now, put on your gloves and safety glasses. With a white grease pencil draw any design you'd like on your tin can. Remember, the design will be made by punching holes through the tin, so designs made of multiple dots are best. Some of the most common choices when making your own patio stringlights are stars and moons since your lanterns will be enjoyed during the evening hours.
Step Three:
Begin placing your nail on your drawn dots and hammering small holes until your design is complete. Once you're finished punching the holes you will need to draw an "X" shape on the bottom of each of your tins. Using your metal snips carefully cut out the lines need to form the "X" and fold the four triangle section back in toward the inside of the tin.
Step Four:
Remove the bulbs from your stringlights and place a tin on each socket. Screw each bulb back into their socket, this will be what holds your lantern in place.
Step Five:
Wait until the sun goes down, pour a glass of wine, ice tea or hot cocoa and enjoy the fruits of your labor! You just made your very own tin can patio stringlights!

Judging from their name, Suicidal Tendencies were never afraid of a little controversy. Formed in Venice, CA, during the early '80s, the group's leader from the beginning was outspoken vocalist Mike Muir. The outfit specialized in vicious hardcore early on — building a huge following among skateboarders, lending a major hand in the creation of skatepunk — before turning their focus eventually to thrash metal. We are all familiar with festoon lighting - strings of lights used around the holidays. They illuminate open air venues, like circuses, and restaurant patios and gatherings under tents. They are low cost, and practical.
Strings of lights came to mind as permanent lighting for the screened porch in the house we were building. They would be a good fit with this informal, industrial style house. Stringlights are not the same thing as low voltage cable lights, which are not suitable for outdoors, and can cost more than ten times as much.
Stringlights are simple to install: During the electrical wiring stage, three outlets were installed high on the wall at intervals across the room. The outlets were connected to a switch, so the lights could be turned on easily. During the finishing stage, ordinary wire was attached to eye screws in the walls. At one end, the eye screws were next to the outlets, so that the lightstring could be plugged in. Three strands of medium gage wire were attached to the eye screws and pulled tight across the room.
We first tried a package of little mini lights on one of the wires, but did not like the twisted green electric wire that came with lights. It was too noticeable. So we took those back and got three boxes of medium bulb Christmas lights. These came with simpler electric wire and larger bulbs. They were called C-7's. You can get C-9's if you want bigger bulbs. There are lots of bulb shapes and sizes to choose from, all the way up to regular sized bulbs.
Each bulb has a little clip so that it can be hung on the wire. We spaced the lights out, and then pulled the strand tight. This brand of light strand can be cut off, so there was not excess at the end. When the strand is cut, you will need some black electrician's tape to seal the end.
When the light strings were turned on we had a nice surprise. The lighting was beautifully diffused throughout the room. It was so soft and diffused that it seemed like moonlight. The back EMF from the coil is harvested in some fashion by the action of the spinning ring magnet. Call it back EMF or radiant energy but whatever its called there is plenty of it at the output as compared to the input energy. Stringlights used to have a pretty limited selection. Either you would choose standard shaped lights with natural colors, or perhaps a more colorful string for a little drama and flair. The natural colored stringlights would normally be used for everyday use, while colored lights would be recommended for special occasions.

The Holiday season is the best time of year, decorating my home and the Christmas Tree. So how do you stringlights on a Christmas Tree? On we go to the fine art of stringing Christmas Lights on our Trees....and yes, it can be considered an art. And to some a fine art.
Make sure that before you begin, to have everything you need on hand. This will eliminate not having something you need while you are the ladder. So we will begin with the ladder, make sure you have a sturdy step ladder or small ladder handy. You will need this while you are wrapping the upper branches, even with a small tree, being on a ladder makes stringing your lights much easier.
You will obviously need your lights, an extension cord if the socket is not close or a step on off/on switch cord, makes lighting your tree easier and some patience.
Would you be surprised to know that it is recommended that you start stringing your Christmas Tree lights at the bottom? We had always started at the top. Reason being...you can follow the electrical outlet with the string of lights and not have too much or too little left over from stringing from the top. Never thought of it that way before. You will also be able to start with the correct male/female connections, ever stringlights and end up with two female ends?
When decorating your Christmas Tree, always start with the lights. The lights are first thing that should be put on before garland or ornaments. Before you start, make sure that the lights are in working order, nothing worse than putting the lights on the tree and half the strand is not working.
As you string your lights use a weaving motion one light under a branch and the next light over, under and over. Tuck the cord into the branches so the cord does not show.
Estimate your space as you work your lights into the branches, stagger and space your rows so that there are no bare spots or clumps of lights together. Be especially careful not to clump the lights together at the top of the tree. The top of the tree should be the showplace for your topper.
If you decide you need more lights on your Christmas Tree, use additional strands and repeat the process of weaving from the top of the tree to the bottom.
Not sure how many lights you need, a quick rule of thumb is to take the height of your tree and times by 10. For example, a six foot tree would approximately 60 feet...I know I go way overboard on the amount of lights on my tree but just can't help it.
Now that you have finished stringing and are satisfied with the lights on your Christmas Tree, it is time to decorate your decorate your tree with ornaments, garland and whatever tickles your fancy....

Mini Lights - Understanding the Design and Assembly of the Three Wire Strings of Them
Single strings of twisted 3-wire mini-lights help to decorate parties, special events, and holidays. Trying to understand their 3-wire 120-volt-alternating-current (VAC) assemblages can be difficult without foreknowledge. Actually, it is fairly simple. Here is how they are designed and put together.
Mini-light strings manufactured today.
Several lengths of mini-light strings (from 15-to-150-feet) are available to consumers today, each one holding a different number of clear or colored mini-bulbs. However, recent attempts to standardize the manufacture of these light strings has focused on the making of 50-bulb sets that can either be used alone as one string, or can be pre-assembled into longer 2-to-3-set, 100-to-150-bulb strings. Each completed string whatever its length will have an electrical plug at each end like an extension cord. This standardization appears to be true both for the older tubular incandescent lights (with their filaments sealed within their 3-mm-diameter bulbs) and the newer LED types (having light emitting diodes encased within the bulbs).
Currently, the newer LED strings are more expensive than the incandescent ones, but they use less electricity than the filament types. Still, the manufacturing of the shorter light strings of either kind having less than 50-bulbs is still done, and they can be found in the stores. But, they are not a major part of the current mass production of mini-lights.
Thus, each full-length string of any bulb-number will have a male plug at one end and a female plug at the other end. Also, these plugs are made so the individual strings can be stacked (two or three them plugged piggyback into each other at each end to make the total string longer) without causing electrical failure. The male plug of each string also has two small 3-amp buss fuses within it, one for each of its two main 120-volt wires. Yet these fuses will blow if the stacked strings get too lengthy (beyond 5 strings) or if too much wattage is drawn by them for other reasons.
To illustrate the description of a 3-wire single-string of mini-lights, this article uses a common 100-bulb string, which contains two 50-bulb sets pre-manufactured as one string. Each bulb in the two sets is rated at about 2.5-volts; i.e., 120-volts/50-bulbs = 2.4-volts/bulb. Short sections at each end of this string and at its middle between the two 50-bulb sets will show two wires only, the two power wires. The third wires are for the bulbs themselves.

Basically, two of the wires on any three-wire mini-lightstring carries the household 120-volts of electricity from one end of the string to the other end similar to the way any extension cord does. The so-called third wire of this string holds all of the mini-bulbs and their sockets in succession (series) a few inches apart. Although the bulbs themselves are in series, this so-called third wire holding the bulbs is connected at each of its ends to each of the two 120-volt wires in parallel.
That is, one end of this bulb wire is connected to the first of the two 120-volt wires at one end of the whole string. The other end is connected to the second 120-volt wire at the other end of the set further down the same string. For a 100-bulb string, a second set of 50-bulbs is connected to the two 120-volt wires the same way further down the string from the first set, where it functions independently from the first set. The finished string can be from 20-to-50-feet long, depending on the spacing between the bulbs.
These connections are hard to see by looking at the finished product because all three wires are twisted to form a tight rope-like string, leaving only the bulbs exposed. Yet, each of these two bulb sets is connected parallel to the 120-voltage wires, which allows them to work independently of each other.
Another advantage of these parallel connections is the electricity itself continues to flow through the main two wires from one-end plug to the other end-plug if one or both bulb-sets fail for any reason. As a result, when a 100-bulb lightstring begins to show unlit bulbs, these failed bulbs could appear in either one or both sets. For example, one 50-bulb set could have all or only a few of its lights not working, while the second set could show all of its bulbs lit okay because each set operates separately from the other one. Since the electricity is still flowing through the two power wires in the latter example (i.e., several lights are still working), then some of the bulbs in the failing set need to be replaced.

String Lights - Perfect For Screened Porch
We are all familiar with festoon lighting - strings of lights used around the holidays. They illuminate open air venues, like circuses, and restaurant patios and gatherings under tents. They are low cost, and practical.
Strings of lights came to mind as permanent lighting for the screened porch in the house we were building. They would be a good fit with this informal, industrial style house. Stringlights are not the same thing as low voltage cable lights, which are not suitable for outdoors, and can cost more than ten times as much.
Stringlights are simple to install: During the electrical wiring stage, three outlets were installed high on the wall at intervals across the room. The outlets were connected to a switch, so the lights could be turned on easily. During the finishing stage, ordinary wire was attached to eye screws in the walls. At one end, the eye screws were next to the outlets, so that the lightstring could be plugged in. Three strands of medium gage wire were attached to the eye screws and pulled tight across the room.
We first tried a package of little mini lights on one of the wires, but did not like the twisted green electric wire that came with lights. It was too noticeable. So we took those back and got three boxes of medium bulb Christmas lights. These came with simpler electric wire and larger bulbs. They were called C-7's. You can get C-9's if you want bigger bulbs. There are lots of bulb shapes and sizes to choose from, all the way up to regular sized bulbs.
Each bulb has a little clip so that it can be hung on the wire. We spaced the lights out, and then pulled the strand tight. This brand of light strand can be cut off, so there was not excess at the end. When the strand is cut, you will need some black electrician's tape to seal the end.
When the light strings were turned on we had a nice surprise. The lighting was beautifully diffused throughout the room. It was so soft and diffused that it seemed like moonlight. Strings of small lights have a special ambience - they remind us of parties and festive times. It was fun to re-interpret this familiar lighting style for everyday use. Photos: StringLights

What Are They?
These lights look a bit like Christmas lights they are strung end to end with small lights that are sometimes covered with larger lanterns or shades. They add a certain flare to outdoor spaces. The most popular is a simple white of clean bulb without any shade at all. Some models come with timers so that they can be turned on and off automatically.

These lights are very affordable. The type of model will play a role in exactly how affordable they are. Of course like anything else the more elaborate and original the lights are the more expensive the lights will be, but even at the most expensive level the cost is relatively low. Usually the price will range anywhere from ten dollars per string to forty dollars per string. The string of lights can contain anywhere from five lights to fifty lights. Outdoor stringlights can be purchased anywhere outdoor furniture and equipment is sold. One of the great joys of my life these days is hanging with the inimitable Mr. Ledward Kaapana when he tours Northern California. On his current visit he spent an afternoon and evening in my little home recording studio exploring a Tacoma Papoose. Needless to say I really enjoyed having a video subject of Ledward's talent and charm. Led has played Sonny Chillingworth's "Weeha Swing" for many years, but I don't think his flying fingers have been captured in an HD closeup too often. On this occasion Led started hitting his stride before I got my lights and cameras fully deployed, but as I often say, "It's better to be lucky than good." The trusty Panasonic Lumix ZS3 was in just the right spot to capture the dancing digits and the smile. The Papoose is a short scale six (or twelve) string guitar, now out of production I believe. This particular instrument was originally owned by Bay Area slack key master, Patrick Landeza. He selected it from the assembly line at Tacoma a number of years ago. He recently passed this rare and lovely P6K Papoose along to me. Led was charmed by it from the instant he picked it up and the result has been hours of gorgeous music. Who Invented Christmas Lights?
Soon after Thomas Edison developed the light bulb that could be used for commercial use, the idea of Christmas tree lights was one of the first applications. Before the discovery of electricity candles were used as Christmas lights. The dangers of this were of major concern at the times.
As time evolved the candles had glass covers, or metal lanterns with small wicks and were hung on the trees like ornaments on Christmas trees. Think about doing that in this day and age: a recipe for a burning house.
Even with the dangers it took many years for holiday tree lights to become commercially available. It's said that the idea of these lights came from Edison's assistant, Edward Johnson: he had the bulbs made specially for his house and he displayed them his Christmas tree lights at his home on New York City.
From these humble beginnings the Christmas tree lights went through many changes before General Electric introduced them commercially. The early days of lights on Christmas trees was night lights strung together to make long stings of lights. You may have seen these in some old pictures. Those large bulbs that would shatter into a million pieces when they hit the floor.
Christmas mini lights were introduced in the mid to late 1970's. There have been many changes to the original Christmas lights but for the most part they are the same. Sales have climbed as application for these lights have changed to not just decorating the tree but also used as outdoor Christmas lights. Icicle lights are the most popular and are seen on most homes that use outdoor lighting at Christmas time. Outdoor decorative lighting has become one of the most popular types and can become somewhat of a competition among neighbors. Many people will use animated Christmas lights that can create a spectacular scene and some are even animated.
Many of the lights used now are led lights. They are long lasting and if one light goes out the whole string will still work, not like the old days, if one light was out you had to go through one by one to figure out the bad bulb. And with some holiday light strings of 100 or more, it was not a fun task. So make sure before you purchase your next set of Christmas lights that it says on the box that you don't have to replace a bad bulb to make the whole string of lights work.

I'll never forget, on the first night of every family camping trip, the first light of those beloved colorful stringlights we had helped mother to hang from tree to tree earlier that afternoon.
It was always the same feeling when their soft but jolly light fell on the ground around us... it was time to be having fun!
That's stringlights for you. Soon as they come on, you just feel like smiling. And anyone that has hung these festive lights and enjoyed that atmosphere knows what I'm talking about.
But in those days, unless you were camping or holding an outdoor Hawaiian luau, the stringlights mostly stayed in a box, just gathering dust in the attic.
These days people don't need special occasions to hang these little wonders but have made them permanent lighting resources as a part of their landscape decor. And people are loving stringlights as never before.
And it thrills me to see them becoming so popular. As a child, I just never understood why we only used them on our camping trips. We had the small multi-colored Chinese lantern type and they made the prettiest glow on our faces as we sat beneath them telling ghost stories.
Today, there are so many styles of stringlights to choose from, and all of them ready to make any corner of your garden a very fun place to be. And not just for an occasional party, but every night!
When my parents passed, I asked for those old Chinese lantern stringlights my mother had strung so many times through the years. Though dusty, worn and torn, and most of the bulbs burned out as well, they hold so many fond memories of our family's camping trips, they are priceless to me.
And in a special corner of my backyard, I have hung some very similar Chinese lanterns. And it's the spot everyone's congregates to, faces aglow, conversation lively... just fun all around.

We are all familiar with festoon lighting - strings of lights used around the holidays. They illuminate open air venues, like circuses, and restaurant patios and gatherings under tents. They are low cost, and practical.
Strings of lights came to mind as permanent lighting for the screened porch in the house we were building. They would be a good fit with this informal, industrial style house. Stringlights are not the same thing as low voltage cable lights, which are not suitable for outdoors, and can cost more than ten times as much.
Stringlights are simple to install: During the electrical wiring stage, three outlets were installed high on the wall at intervals across the room. The outlets were connected to a switch, so the lights could be turned on easily. During the finishing stage, ordinary wire was attached to eye screws in the walls. At one end, the eye screws were next to the outlets, so that the lightstring could be plugged in. Three strands of medium gage wire were attached to the eye screws and pulled tight across the room.
We first tried a package of little mini lights on one of the wires, but did not like the twisted green electric wire that came with lights. It was too noticeable. So we took those back and got three boxes of medium bulb Christmas lights. These came with simpler electric wire and larger bulbs. They were called C-7's. You can get C-9's if you want bigger bulbs. There are lots of bulb shapes and sizes to choose from, all the way up to regular sized bulbs.
Each bulb has a little clip so that it can be hung on the wire. We spaced the lights out, and then pulled the strand tight. This brand of light strand can be cut off, so there was not excess at the end. When the strand is cut, you will need some black electrician's tape to seal the end.
When the light strings were turned on we had a nice surprise. The lighting was beautifully diffused throughout the room. It was so soft and diffused that it seemed like moonlight. The Holiday season is the best time of year, decorating my home and the Christmas Tree. So how do you stringlights on a Christmas Tree? On we go to the fine art of stringing Christmas Lights on our Trees....and yes, it can be considered an art. And to some a fine art.
Make sure that before you begin, to have everything you need on hand. This will eliminate not having something you need while you are the ladder. So we will begin with the ladder, make sure you have a sturdy step ladder or small ladder handy. You will need this while you are wrapping the upper branches, even with a small tree, being on a ladder makes stringing your lights much easier.
You will obviously need your lights, an extension cord if the socket is not close or a step on off/on switch cord, makes lighting your tree easier and some patience.
Would you be surprised to know that it is recommended that you start stringing your Christmas Tree lights at the bottom? We had always started at the top. Reason being...you can follow the electrical outlet with the string of lights and not have too much or too little left over from stringing from the top. Never thought of it that way before. You will also be able to start with the correct male/female connections, ever stringlights and end up with two female ends?
When decorating your Christmas Tree, always start with the lights. The lights are first thing that should be put on before garland or ornaments. Before you start, make sure that the lights are in working order, nothing worse than putting the lights on the tree and half the strand is not working.
As you string your lights use a weaving motion one light under a branch and the next light over, under and over. Tuck the cord into the branches so the cord does not show.
Estimate your space as you work your lights into the branches, stagger and space your rows so that there are no bare spots or clumps of lights together. Be especially careful not to clump the lights together at the top of the tree. The top of the tree should be the showplace for your topper.
If you decide you need more lights on your Christmas Tree, use additional strands and repeat the process of weaving from the top of the tree to the bottom.
Not sure how many lights you need, a quick rule of thumb is to take the height of your tree and times by 10. For example, a six foot tree would approximately 60 feet...I know I go way overboard on the amount of lights on my tree but just can't help it.
Now that you have finished stringing and are satisfied with the lights on your Christmas Tree, it is time to decorate your decorate your tree with ornaments, garland and whatever tickles your fancy....

Being energy efficient, and suitable for most purposes indoors and outdoors, stringlights are the best option to your festive needs when you require lighting that is subtle and pleasing to add that special touch.

Then as you work your way down, you will want to circle the lights around the outdoor tree. The space between each row of stringlights does not have to be perfect. Once the lights are wrapped all the way down your outdoor tree, you will want to tuck the stringlights into the tree, just a little bit. If you live in a windy area, you may need to secure the stringlights with small pieces of wire. Once it gets dark, it will be easier to make the necessary adjustments. The end result will be beautiful stringlights on an outdoor tree that provide a soothing lighting effect to your yard.

Some people will spend large amounts of money and hours of time designing in setting up lighting schemes within their home that make the most of every dark nook and cranny. There are lots of bulb shapes and sizes to choose from, all the way up to regular sized bulbs.
Each bulb has a little clip so that it can be hung on the wire. We spaced the lights out, and then pulled the strand tight. This brand of light strand can be cut off, so there was not excess at the end. When the strand is cut, you will need some black electrician's tape to seal the end.
When the light strings were turned on we had a nice surprise. The lighting was beautifully diffused throughout the room. It was so soft and diffused that it seemed like moonlight. I themed mine, of course. :-D In my maze, Shakespeare is the stage manager for a theatre company. She goes in the stage door, weaves through the costume room, goes up the stairs to stage level, moves the props, pulls the lights up, climbs up to the catwalk, goes across the rope, sits with the audience, unrolls the red carpet, and reveals the surprise! It took about 4 weeks to train her. She's a bit slow at the beginning of this video because she learned the maze last-to-first, which means she learned the end of the maze before the beginning. Still, she does it pretty well. This video was shot about 2 weeks after the Final in the class, and she hadn't practiced at all in those 2 weeks. I'm amazed she remembered everything!

Composer/pianist Ola Gjeilo joins the CWU Chamber Choir (Gary Weidenaar, director) in presenting Gjeilo's "Ubi Caritas". In mid-April, 2011, Ola spent 3 days on the Central Washington University Campus for a project in which he joined the choir in recording 3 of his compositions. On this video, Gjeilo adds an improvised accompaniment (in a one-take rendition) to his setting of the Ubi Caritas text -- which is published as an unaccompanied piece. Because of his view that improvising is a wonderful snapshot of artists "at that moment", the project was entitled "In the Moment". The other composition to which he created an improvised accompaniment was "Northern Lights". He also accompanied the choir on "The Ground", which includes CWU's resident faculty quartet -- the Kairos String Quartet. One of the great joys of my life these days is hanging with the inimitable Mr. Ledward Kaapana when he tours Northern California. On his current visit he spent an afternoon and evening in my little home recording studio exploring a Tacoma Papoose. Needless to say I really enjoyed having a video subject of Ledward's talent and charm. Led has played Sonny Chillingworth's "Weeha Swing" for many years, but I don't think his flying fingers have been captured in an HD closeup too often. On this occasion Led started hitting his stride before I got my lights and cameras fully deployed, but as I often say, "It's better to be lucky than good." The trusty Panasonic Lumix ZS3 was in just the right spot to capture the dancing digits and the smile. The Papoose is a short scale six (or twelve) string guitar, now out of production I believe. This particular instrument was originally owned by Bay Area slack key master, Patrick Landeza. He selected it from the assembly line at Tacoma a number of years ago. He recently passed this rare and lovely P6K Papoose along to me. Led was charmed by it from the instant he picked it up and the result has been hours of gorgeous music. He's tried at least four different tunings on it so far, and it sings in all of them with Mr. Kaapana conducting. In this video he's playing a B-Flat version of G wahine. For over 20 years rumor has it that Mark O'Connor performed an entire concert while riding a skateboard. After 20 years, the rumors have become legend. But still people have wondered; was it true? Did it take place, where, and with who? A video has now surfaced from the audience of 2000 people circling a blocked off street in downtown Nashville capturing the events of this musical-skateboarding adventure. The Skateboarding Extravaganza was an idea that Mark O'Connor put together with some of his good friends who were musicians and skateboarders. Together, they would often ride their boards in empty parking garages in the middle of the night (even during the period they were releasing Grammy winning albums!) The Extravaganza was an official scheduled event at the Summer Lights Festival. Output voltage measured across the light string was 193 volts. I am buying some larger lamps to try the same thing. Yes you can read using the light output from this setup. Best of all there is only "ONE" moving part. Thats the spinning diametric ring magnet. I am working on that area right now to make it almost friction free. The back EMF from the coil is harvested in some fashion by the action of the spinning ring magnet. Call it back EMF or radiant energy but whatever its called there is plenty of it at the output as compared to the input energy. Judging from their name, Suicidal Tendencies were never afraid of a little controversy. Formed in Venice, CA, during the early '80s, the group's leader from the beginning was outspoken vocalist Mike Muir. The outfit specialized in vicious hardcore early on — building a huge following among skateboarders, lending a major hand in the creation of skatepunk — before turning their focus eventually to thrash metal. Early on, the group (whose original lineup included Muir, guitarist Grant Estes, bassist Louiche Mayorga, and drummer Amery Smith) found it increasingly difficult to book shows, due to rumors of its members' affiliation with local gangs and consistent violence at their performances. The underground buzz regarding Suicidal Tendencies grew too loud for labels to ignore though, as the quartet signed on with the indie label Frontier; issuing Muir and company's classic self-titled debut in 1983. The album quickly became the best-selling hardcore album up to that point; its best-known track, "Institutionalized," was one of the first hardcore punk videos to receive substantial airplay on MTV, and was eventually used in the Emilio Estevez cult classic movie Repo Man, as well as in an episode for the hit TV show Miami Vice (for which the group made a cameo appearance).
